The risk of skin cancer is lowered with intake of caffeine, says study. The study included close to 113000 people and presented some conclusions about the risk of skin cancer among Americans. They said that one out of five Americans will have skin cancer in his life, while 80 per cent will get diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma.
The cause for concern in their research is that new number of cases being diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma is increasing at an alarming rate of 4-8 per cent every year. The researchers suggest that the variant of cancer can become as common among Americans as all other cancers combined.
The data for men was collected from Health Professionals Follow-Up Study and for women from Nurses' Health Study. The risk of skin cancer due to various factors, such as sunburns and natural hair colour, were studied. The women who had most caffeine were found to have an 18 per cent reduced risk of skin cancer. The men who were most fond of coffee had a 13 per cent lower risk of basal cell carcinoma. The researchers were able to establish such a link between caffeine and risk of skin cancer only for the basal cell carcinoma variant.
