Researchers at the Temple University in Philadelphia have concluded that bottle-feeding makes kids obese. They have arrived at the conclusion after studying the feeding habits of nearly 7000 American kids.
Obesity has been linked to bottle-feeding because according to the study kids who got to bed with a bottle tend to become accustomed to the consumption of more calories. More importantly, these kids have a 30 % higher chance of being overweight by the time they are 5 years old. For example, when a 2 years old girl who is of average weight and height is put to bed with a bottle that has 8 ounces of milk, she will get almost 12 % of her caloric needs from that bottle. Out of the children who were monitored for the research, 22 % were put to bed with a bottle. Of this percentage, 23 % kids were obese by the time they were aged 5. This phenomenon is not affected by other factors of weight management such as the mother’s weight during pregnancy, the weight of the kid at birth and feeding practices.
The fact that bottle-feeding makes kids obese is a disturbing revelation. It means that parents necessary medical and safety tips to wean their kids from the feeding bottle by the time they are 1 year old.
