Blame your childhood companions for your weight

London: A study reveals that the age old beliefs such as obesity is caused by over-watching telly, eating junk etc can be replaced by your childhood companions. The study was carried out by a team from the Newcastle University, UK.

According to the research, the people who one spends his or her time most with as a child act as catalysts for change in terms of body weight as one grows up. The study set parameters by way of a body weight comparison of 236 pairs of adolescent siblings who lived together and 838 pairs of adult siblings who did not live together.

The body mass indices of both the groups seemed to become similar over time. The body mass index is a ratio of weight and height proportion that indicates the apt height and weight of an individual. The research blamed family factors such as upbringing, heredity etc to have pushed the similarities forth in both the siblings. Therefore, establishing the fact that behaviour that was built up during childhood was carried all the way to adulthood. The research demonstrates the importance of early intervention to prevent obesity from settling in by adulthood.

The result of the findings was published in journal Obesity, which suggested the effect of adult social networks on one’s health in terms of weight gain. The critiques, however, opine that the study was conducted on demography of adolescent siblings and that it wasn’t coherent to conclude the same for the larger social circle/s.
