My hair is very dry. Please give me a home remedy.
—Riya sen

Once or twice a week heat pure coconut oil and apply on the scalp and hair. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the hot towel around the head, like a turban. Keep it on for 5 minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap 3 or 4 times. This helps the hair and scalp absorb the oil better. Use a mild herbal shampoo. Use less shampoo and rinse well with water. Applying curd on the hair half an hour before shampoo helps to soften the hair.

How can I tone my skin and what should I use?
—Namrata

Skin toning should be done after cleansing in the morning. It helps to improve blood circulation to the skin surface and adds a natural glow. Rose water is one of the best known natural skin toners. Using cotton wool pads, wipe the skin with rose water. Soak pads again and pat the skin briskly with it. Gentle stroking movements can also be followed with the cotton wool pads, starting on the cheeks, with an outward and slightly upward movement. Using both hands, work on each side simultaneously, going towards the temples. Press lightly at each temple. For the chin and on either corner of the nose, use small circular strokes. Use a circular motion and a very light touch around the eyes.

I do not have any skin problems, but my skin looks dull. How can I make it glow?
—Smitha

A3. You can improve the look of your skin by paying attention to diet and exercise. Include fresh fruits, raw salads, sprouts, curd in your daily diet. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. Exercise daily.  This would help to improve blood circulation to the skin surface. Follow a daily skin-care routine, according to skin-type. You can mix 3 teaspoons oatmeal with egg white and one teaspoon each of honey and curd. Apply on the face once or twice a week and wash it off after 20 minutes.

I would like my skin to be fairer. Can I have it bleached or should I use a fairness cream? I have dry skin.
—Sangeetha

I do not advocate bleaching, because it can destroy the natural beauty of the skin. You can use honey with curd in equal quantities, add a pinch of turmeric (haldi) and apply it on the skin daily. Wash it off after 15 minutes. Twice a week mix cucumber and ripe papaya pulp with one teaspoon curd, one teaspoon honey, 4 teaspoons oatmeal and one teaspoon lemon juice. Apply on face and wash off after 20 to 30 minutes. Oatmeal will be available in food stores. It is used for making porridge.

How often should I wash my hair? My hair is so oily that I need to wash it everyday and I feel that I am damaging my hair. Is it alright to wash the hair daily?
—Laxmi

Yes, you can wash the hair every day, but use  mild shampoo. Also, use very little shampoo - one teaspoon for long hair and half teaspoon for short hair. Dilute with a little water and then apply. Wash very well with water after shampoo. One application of shampoo should be enough for each hair wash. After washing your hair, add the juice of a lemon to half a mug of water and pour it over the hair as a last rinse. This helps to reduce oiliness. Weekly henna treatments will also help.
