Sleep is a wonderful phenomenon. People suffer sleep disorders and sleep deprivation; people do not have right sleeping patterns. Many a time, it so happens that people sleep on their couches while watching television, forgetting to turn the television off and then there will be days when people just doze off while reading a book, and how can we just forget the days when people would use their mobile phones in dark. If you too are doing all these things, if you have somewhat exact same sleeping habit, you might want to read this if you are planning to conceive.

Avoid these sleep habits if you are planning to conceive

Carried out by researchers of Japan Science and Technology Agency from Osaka University, a recent study reveals that habit of exposing the torso and eyes to artificial lights at night before sleeping can minimize the chances of conceiving. Yes, researchers have carried out an experiment wherein they took some mice and exposed them in artificial lights while they were sleeping and they found out that mice were left with fewer chances of getting pregnant, especially the mice that were slightly older, middle aged ones. The younger ones were also affected but the impact was greater on the older ones.

Now, if you are surprised and are wondering about the connection between fertility and light, there is an explanation. We have a circadian rhythm in our body, which has a relation with artificial light. We have an internal clock that manages and controls almost everything, also our sleep patterns and menstrual cycle. There is a hormone called melatonin, which has control over our sleep cycle. This melatonin hormone is controlled by suprachiasmatic nucleus, which is located right behind the brain’s optic nerves.

The study further revealed that when there is less or dim light, the suprachiasmatic nucleus or SCN sends information to brain to release more melatonin and this makes you feel sleepy. Now, melatonin also modifies the two reproductive hormones, progesterone and estrogen. When a woman trying to conceive sleeps with too many artificial lights in room, the melatonin is produced in a decreased amount while it should be highest when women are trying.

So, the experiment done on mice is an alert for you to quit your habit of sleeping with lights on. If you too sleep with lights on, or you keep your gadgets near while sleeping, you must stop if you wish to conceive. A peaceful sleep is what you need if you wish to concieve successfully.
