Sedative-hypnotic drugs which are also known as ``depressants’’ slows down the brain activity. Some the best known drugs are barbiturates (Amytal, Nembutal, Seconal, phenobarbital) and benzodiazepines (Ativan, Halcion, Librium, Valium, Xanax, Rohypnol).
Alcohol has also been classified as a depressant but its consumption is so common that it has alcohol addiction is addressed separately.
When a person consumes drugs on a regular basis which makes the body adjust to them. With time the dosage needs to get higher to achieve the effect. Due to regular usage, dependence on the drug also becomes prominent and withdrawal symptoms start showing up if the usage is stopped suddenly.

When your health care provider suspects that you are addicted to depressants, they will put up certain questions to confirm your addiction. They will ask you about the kind of drug you have been using, the amount and frequency of usage, the duration of your dependence on the drug, and the circumstances under which you started using the drug. The doctor will also ask you about the symptoms, psychological problems, or any other behavioral problems that you may be experiencing.
To prevent the addiction the drugs only the amount prescribed by the doctor should be used. Under no circumstances more than the prescribed amount should be used. However, the stress-related addiction caused due to psychological, biological, and social factors cannot be prevented. As soon as you feel that the medication prescribed by the doctor is no longer required consult the doctor. Completely avoid taking mediations prescribed to someone else.
